We all know that exercise is good for us. It helps to build muscles, increase endurance, and keep your heart healthy. It can also do a lot to reduce stress, improve your mood, and increase your attention.
I used to take Tae Kwon Do classes. I loved it until until I tore my ACL while sparring with my instructor. Many times, I referred it those classes as my therapy. Going there a few times a week helped me to get out my stress, frustration, anger, and anxiety in a healthy way. I used to say that I punched and kicked at everything that was bothering me in those classes.
Research supports my experience. Exercise goes a long way toward boosting your mood. And it doesn’t have to be as intensive as a Tae Kwon Do class! Even moderate physical activity such as walking or going on a bike ride can improve your sense of well-being. In fact, researchers at the University of Connecticut recently found that there were no added mood benefits of working out aggressively as compared to moderate activity.
So, what does all of this mean for you and your homeschooling day? It means that incorporating exercise into your day and your children’s day is very healthy. It will help you all to maintain a more positive attitude and help to reset your mood when you or your children are getting overly stressed.
It is good to strategically plan some physical activity each day. This could be a hike with your kids or a field trip that gets you out of the house. But it can also just be a walk around your neighborhood or a bike ride together.
When you see your children (or feel yourself) needing a break, take the time then to do something a little physical. Challenge each other to push-ups or sit-ups. Send your child out to get the mail and time how quickly he can do it. Play a silly, physical game. Make an obstacle course. The idea is just to get you and your kids moving.
And who knows, maybe you’ll find that you and your kids can form some great memories…like that time your sons built an obstacle course throughout the house and the dog followed along. No wait…that one is my memory.
